The Coyote Buttes is a section of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It spans extreme South Central Utah and North Central Arizona, just south of US 89 halfway between Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona. Zion National Park is located only a few hours away to the northwest.

One of the highlights of the Coyote Buttes is the incredible sandstone formation known simply as The Wave, and the Second Wave, another incredible sandstone swirl. A day hike is required to visit the area. Because the area is so delicate and to preserve the wilderness experience, the BLM limits the number of visitors each day to 20 via a permit system. The hike begins at the Wire Pass trailhead, which is located 5 miles (9km) west of the Paria Canyon Ranger Station, and 9 miles (15 km) south of US 89 down a dirt road.

Getting a permit to hike into and photograph the Coyote Buttes can be a frustrating experience, due to the daily limit on visitors, however the winter months are the least visited and the sunset light is best on the Second Wave.
